Jr. Flight Data Analyst

Have you ever wondered what is recorded on an aircraft “Black Box”?

Scaled Analytics has an exciting and amazing opportunity for the right person to join our team as a Junior Flight Data Analyst.

No experience is necessary. We will provide you with the training and mentoring you will need to excel in this position and build an amazing career.

However, not everyone will have the right stuff. We are looking for an individual to invest in that has a few key qualities that will help ensure his or her success. But before we get into that, what exactly does a Flight Data Analyst do?

Responsibilities:

As a Junior Flight Data Analyst, you would be working under the supervision and mentorship of one of our Senior Flight Data Analysts in order to help our customers make sense of their flight data. Some of the tasks that would be assigned to you include:

  • Configuring and operating our cloud-based Flight Data Analysis software, Sky Analyst.
  • Reviewing and validating Flight Data Monitoring (FDM) and Flight Operations Quality Assurance (FOQA) events.
  • Preparing monthly and ad-hoc reports and statistical data to identify flight safety and operational trends.
  • Providing exceptional customer support.
  • Providing customer training (exceptionally, of course).
  • Assisting with the development of FRED files.
  • Programming FDM/FOQA events and updating trigger limits.
  • Assisting with Flight Data Recorder (FDR) reasonableness reports.
  • Assisting with aircraft incident investigations.
  • Supporting the Software Development team in testing new software features and fixes.
  • Other duties as assigned. (Don’t tell our competitors, but we’re just getting started here and we have a lot of exciting new projects planned that you would be participating in.)

So, what types of qualifications are we looking for? Here are our “must haves” and “nice to haves”:

Required:

  • You have a passion for aviation. You will be a Flight Data Analyst after all, so it helps to like aircraft.
  • You have great integrity and attention to detail. Our customers depend on us to help them improve aviation safety. The integrity of our team is absolutely essential. You are trustworthy, dependable and you make sure you dot all your I’s and cross all your T’s. And then you check them once more just to be sure.
  • You are outgoing and you understand the importance of great customer support. Our customers come before all else, even our shareholders, so you need to be friendly, outgoing and a great communicator.
  • You have a very strong aptitude for things technical – especially when it comes to software and computers. You do not need to be a rocket scientist, but you have a knack for learning new things that can be quite technical.
  • You have VERY strong computer skills. You know your way around a computer and then some.
  • You are a team player. You will be hired as a Flight Data Analyst, but because we are a small, focussed company, there could be times when you might need to help out another team member with “non-Flight Data Analyst” activities. No job is too big or too small for you.
  • You are looking for a career with long term growth potential. You are not just looking for a “job”.
  • You may be required to work overtime and at the last minute. This is very rare, but it does happen occasionally. If it does, don’t worry – we’ll make it up to you.
  • You are legally entitled to work in Canada. This position is located on-site at our office in Kanata (Ottawa), Ontario. Our team spends a lot of time collaborating so we need all team members in the office most of the time. This is not a remote position.

Nice to Have:

We won’t throw your resume out if you do not have these qualifications, but they could certainly give you an edge if you do:

  • A College Diploma or University Degree (or both) in a technical or scientific discipline. You will be looking at data, so post-secondary education in math, science, engineering, computers or similar would be an asset.
  • A pilot license or some flight experience would be a strong asset. Yeah, we know it’s expensive so even if you just started some training but didn’t finish, we’d still like to hear about it.
  • Experience working with databases and large volumes of data.
  • Some computer programming experience would be an asset. You don’t have to be a professional programmer, but some experience with Python, DAX, R, SQL, C, C++, C#, Bash, PowerShell, or other computer language(s) would be considered a strong asset.
  • Ability to speak another language. Our customers are located all around the world and most speak English very well, but knowing another language could still come in handy.

What’s it Like to Work Here?

We’re a small company of specialized professionals and we plan to keep it like that. If you are looking to climb the corporate ladder of a multi-billion dollar corporation, this will not be the right fit for you.

But, if you want to be part of a small team where your voice and ideas can be heard, you get to learn from some of the best in the business, you can have real work-life balance and you do not have to deal with bureaucratic layers of red tape to get your job done, then we could be the perfect fit for you.

We are a team of professionals and we expect a high level of professionalism from all of our team members. But we also enjoy a fairly relaxed work atmosphere.

Of course, we offer competitive salaries, health and dental benefits, employee purchase discounts, and an RRSP matching program, but that’s really all gravy to you. You’re mostly just interested in this exciting career opportunity. Getting paid to do something you love is just a bonus.

How to Apply:

So if this sounds like the right fit for you, what’s next? Just send us your resume along with a cover letter explaining what excites you about the opportunity and how you are a perfect fit.
